    Spatial separation in a thermal mixture of ultracold 174^{174}Yb and 87^{87}Rb atoms

    We report on the observation of unusually strong interactions in a thermal mixture of ultracold atoms which cause a significant modification of the spatial distribution. A mixture of 87^{87}Rb and 174^{174}Yb with a temperature of a few μ\muK is prepared in a hybrid trap consisting of a bichromatic optical potential superimposed on a magnetic trap. For suitable trap parameters and temperatures, a spatial separation of the two species is observed. We infer that the separation is driven by a large interaction strength between 174^{174}Yb and 87^{87}Rb accompanied by a large three-body recombination rate. Based on this assumption we have developed a diffusion model which reproduces our observations

    Ophthalmosauridae is a clade of derived thunniform ichthyosaurs that are best known from Callovian (late Middle Jurassic) to Cenomanian-aged (Late Cretaceous) deposits in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Ophthalmosaurids arose prior to the Early-Middle Jurassic boundary, however, very little is known about their diversity and distribution in the earliest phase of their evolutionary history during the Aalenian-Bathonian (Middle Jurassic) interval. Here we describe new diagnostic ophthalmosaurid material from the Early Bajocian (Middle Jurassic) of Alaska. The specimen, UAMES 3411, is a partial disarticulated skull that was discovered in the Middle Jurassic Tuxedni Formation, which was deposited in shallow marine settings outboard of the then-accreting Wrangellia composite terrane. The new material is significant in that it is the first Jurassic ichthyosaur described from Alaska, one of the oldest ophthalmosaurids known and the only Middle Jurassic ophthalmosaurid described from the Northern Hemisphere. The new material adds to a rapidly growing data set on ophthalmosaurid diversity and suggests that the clade was geographically widespread by the Early Bajocian, very early in its evolutionary histor

    Tunable subpicosecond electron bunch train generation using a transverse-to-longitudinal phase space exchange technique

    We report on the experimental generation of a train of subpicosecond electron bunches. The bunch train generation is accomplished using a beamline capable of exchanging the coordinates between the horizontal and longitudinal degrees of freedom. An initial beam consisting of a set of horizontally-separated beamlets is converted into a train of bunches temporally separated with tunable bunch duration and separation.     Tunneling mechanism of light transmission through metallic films

    A mechanism of light transmission through metallic films is proposed, assisted by tunnelling between resonating buried dielectric inclusions. This is illustrated by arrays of Si spheres embedded in Ag. Strong transmission peaks are observed near the Mie resonances of the spheres. The interaction among various planes of spheres and interference effects between these resonances and the surface plasmons of Ag lead to mixing and splitting of the resonances. Transmission is proved to be limited only by absorption. For small spheres, the effective dielectric constant can be tuned to values close to unity and a method is proposed to turn the resulting materials invisible.Comment: 4 papges, 5 figure

    The use of implicit evidence for relevance feedback in web retrieval

    In this paper we report on the application of two contrasting types of relevance feedback for web retrieval. We compare two systems; one using explicit relevance feedback (where searchers explicitly have to mark documents relevant) and one using implicit relevance feedback (where the system endeavours to estimate relevance by mining the searcher's interaction). The feedback is used to update the display according to the user's interaction. Our research focuses on the degree to which implicit evidence of document relevance can be substituted for explicit evidence. We examine the two variations in terms of both user opinion and search effectiveness

    Neutrino Bremsstrahlung Process in highly degenerate magnetized electron gas

    In this article the neutrino bremsstrahlung process is considered in presence of strong magnetic field, though the calculations for this process in absence of magnetic field are also carried out simultaneously. The electrons involved in this process are supposed to be highly degenerate and relativistic. The scattering cross sections and energy loss rates for both cases, in presence and absence of magnetic field, are calculated in the extreme-relativistic limit. Two results are compared in the range of temperature 5.9×1095.9\times 10^{9} K <T≤1011< T\leq 10^{11} K and magnetic field 1014−101610^{14} - 10^{16} G at a fixed density ∼1015\sim 10^{15} gm/ccgm/cc, a typical environment during the cooling of magnetized neutron star.     Comparison of the USGS 2001 NLCD to the 2002 USDA Census of Agriculture for the Upper Midwest United States

    The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) 2001 National Land Cover Database (NLCD) was compared to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) 2002 Census of Agriculture. Wecompared areal estimates for cropland at the state and county level for 14 States in the Upper Midwest region of the United States. Absolute differences between the NLCD and Census cropland areal estimates at the state level ranged from 1.3% (Minnesota) to 37.0% (Wisconsin). The majority of counties (74.5%) had differences of less than 100 km2. 7.2% of the counties had differences of more than 200 km2. Regions where the largest areal differences occurred were in southern Illinois, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin, and generally occurred in areas with the lowest proportions of cropland (i.e., dominated by forest or grassland). Before using the 2001 NLCD for agricultural applications, such as mapping of specific crop types, users should be aware of the potential for misclassification errors, especially where the proportion of cropland to other land cover types is fairly lo

    The cost of estimating hydraulic parameters from slug test, pumping test, soil sample analysis etc is expensive. However, these parameters such as transverse resistance and longitudinal conductance can be estimated from geophysical parameters which are cost effective, noninvasive and inexpensive. In this present study, twenty (20) geoelectric sounding were carried out in Iyesi- Jackross axis with the use of ABEM 1000 series terrameter using schlumberger array and AB/2 ranges from 240m to 420m. The result revealed that there are six lithological layers in the study area namely; topsoil, lateritic clay, clayey sand, kaolitic clay, clayey sand (low yield aquifer) and sand (Main aquifer). The aquifer’s depth ranges from 45.1m to 114.7 m with resistivity values ranges from 19.5 Ωm to 850.8 Ωm. Furthermore, transverse resistance and longitudinal conductance were estimated from geophysical parameters and it was observed that longitudinal conductance is low which ranges from 0.0127 Ω−1 to 0.0941 Ω −1 . Consequently, the aquiferous unit is characterized with high transmissivity and hydraulic conductivity. Transverse resistance ranges from 12246.00 Ωm2 to 124878.61 Ωm2 and increase in transverse resistance that was observed generally indicating high transmissivity and high yield of the aquiferous units. It is therefore signifies that the study area is characterized with good groundwater potential. Further study can be carried out to estimate the boundary of aquifer thickness and the possible intrusion of Basement complex using magnetic technique
